HELLO!

I'm back after another brief hiatus.

So I got a job in the real world. A job that requires me to wear mostly black, mostly all of the time. All of a sudden, I have become a sort of makeshift expert on black tights - what you really want is a good high denier, nice and matte but crucially not woolen. These Falke Pure Matt 100 are, hands down, the best ones I've come across; modeled fetchingly here by the good people at Net-a-Porter. Can't tell you how excited I was when I discovered they did such a high denier.

That's right folks, it's a blog post about tights.

Mind absolutely blown. Evidently I've been imagining the world before about 1952 as being in black and white. Not so, clearly. I've fallen into a little pit of googling the technique they used back then (~autochrome~). I won't do as good a job explaining as Wiki, but I will tell you it uses potatoes. Potatoes!

I feel like this is the obvious thing to say here, but some of these shots look weirdly of-the-moment. Well, maybe not quite but there's a definite timeless vibe going on..

I can't believe I haven't had a little rant about the Jil Sander collection yet. So much so that I had to go back through the archives a bit to make sure I hadn't. Cannot get over this collection. Absolute favorite of the season I think, love the colourblocking (ooh, buzzword), the jackets layered over more jackets and the occasional pop of print. And the stripes! So good. Very excited to start wearing long neon skirts with white t-shirts and loads of jackets once the weather cheers up a bit..

It's attainable luxury at it's finest; it's not cheap, but just about affordable if you go without the odd pack of cigarettes for about a month. While we were in the studio (D-Light, an amazing space in one of the weirdest locations in the city) we shot some of the dresses from Eilis' tenth collection. Oxfam have launched a range of limited edition t-shirts designed by various Irish designers including Peter O'Brien, Alison Conneely and Joanne Hynes. I was lucky enough to be involved in the beginning stages of one of the tees, designed by the lovely Eilis Boyle (more on that later).

The photos here are via Angela Scanlon, who styled the campaign-I love the street style vibe of the shoot. The tees are 100% fairtrade and are available from the a|wear site, priced at around €30 each.

Hey there // I like your hair

Having read about Moroccanoil hair products for months on beauty blogs and thinking you couldn't buy it anywhere in Dublin, I finally got my child paws (and dried out split ends) on some of the shine serum at the VIP Towers beauty sale (a magical event I was lucky enough to be around for during my time with The Dubliner magazine). The serum smells lovely and really does make your hair shiny, but I was still gagging for a bottle of the original treatment. Amazingly, I found it in a random salon (on Clarendon Street, for any interested parties), and it really is the absolute business. It's really satisfyingly thick and gooey in the hands, but put into damp hair before normal styling (read - blowdrying the shit out of), it doesn't feel oily or sticky. I recently dyed the ends of my hair lighter; my first foray into colour since I bleached a few chunks and dyed them pink when I was fourteen- which means that the ends now properly resemble straw if left to their own devices. Thankfully, a few pumps of this absolute gem of a product and my poor distressed ends are lovely and silky. Can't reccommend it highly enough, just trust me and go buy a bottle.

Alexa Chung's collection for American jeanswear label Madewell launched last week, and it's a cracker. As far as Alexa is concerned, I'm pretty sure she's a little over-hyped. I mean, I like her an' all but I'm not so sure about the "icon" label. Having said that, she always looks great, doesn't she? Her stuff for Madewell is exactly what you'd expect, blouses, peter pan collars and some really really nice coats. Not particularly exciting, but lovely classic pieces. I want any or all of these things:

While we're on topic, go and have a look at the Madewell site ( here!). Great example of what online shopping should be, it's not too fussy, and the styling is ace. The actual merch is lovely too, simple denim and cardis and some really decent footwear. Now all they need to do is ship out of the US and we're in business.

Riccardo Tisci, you absolute hero. This is the most excited I've been about a couture show in a long while, it's incredible. Lace, feathers, fringe-work - amazing. In classic Tisci stlye, the collection is really sensual - all texture and flesh tones and racy mesh panels. The anatomy references are amazing without being novelty: skeleton shapes done in lace and bones for zippers. Can you imagine wearing one of these babies?! Encrusted with Swarovski, beads and god knows what else, one of them took 1,600 hours to make. Holy shit.

With the season that's in it (finally Dublin is seeing a decent amount of sun), I thought I'd mention one of my summer time essentials (do I sense a possible recurring theme? Probably, stay tuned). If, like me, you're a bit scummy and refuse to wash your hair for at least a week after being in the sea, then this will be right up your alley. Salt water seems to do something to my curly/tangly hair that you just can't replicate. But this is absolutely the next best thing:

Bumble and Bumble surf spray.

Spray it liberally onto overly clean hair and you'll look properly scruffy, and no-one will suspect you've just washed your hair.

We finally got the American Apparel nail polish into the Dublin store. Obviously I've been solidly buying one every few days since.. So far I have amassed:

Rose Bowl, a solid darkish/lightish pink. Not my usual colour scheme (ie. not as beigey pink as I would have liked).

Cotton, a really satisfyingly tippex-y white.

Berries, a departure for me but it matches most of my non-nude lipsticks and looks surprisingly good with a tan.

Coney Island, my absolute favorite so far, a proper, slightly offensive neon pink.

Next I think I might go with Factory Grey, it looks promising. I've been gagging for a decent dark grey since I got a Nails Inc. mani in London and didn't ever get to buy the colour (rage). Also can't wait to get my paws on the summer range; a load of neutral pastels. At least two variations on beige to add to the pile. Exciting.

As for quality, I'm never sure about the chip resistance of nail polish as a)I always use a top coat (Nails Inc. til I can get my hands on some Seche Vite) and b)I get bored and usually pick it off within 24 hours. But I like the consistancy, pretty fool proof, and with two coats you get a really decent opaque finish. Plus, at 7 quid you can't really go wrong, can you?

What is it with famous people and having insanely good gene pools? I've become mildyly obsessed, Dellal-style, with Coco Sumner, daughter of Sting.

Handily being compared here to Alice, who we know from past experience I'm a bit mad about.

The best bit about her is that I genuinely very much enjoy her tunes. Props to her for not just being shit and famous, it's probably actually a massive pain in the ass being Sting's daughter. Plus imagine the world knowing about your parents' tantric sex habits. Rough.

Another beauty star, Alexa. Honestly, I don't get the mad hype about Ms. Chung. Like, she's cool and all, but I don't think she's as iconic as they say. Having said that, I'm very much enjoy the berry lips.

I've finally remedied my blindness: I got a pair of glasses that I actually like, as opposed to my old, uggo ones which I would have to sneakily put on five minutes into movies/lectures. I mean, my eyesight isn't that bad, but it's juuust bad enough that I end up giving people in the street the accidental evil-eye while trying to distinguish facial features. One time I went to the cinema with a boy and was too embarrassed to put 'em on. Squinty, to say the least. There's a photo of my face coming. It's a lot wankier than I intended. Soz.
